Promove UK Ltd will this year be showcasing new padded handles to go with its innovative emergency evacuation device at the Emergency Services Show in Stoneleigh Park near Coventry.
The handles are made from webbing which is surrounded by a soft, pliable plastic moulding. The new handles have been tailor made for the sling to ensure a more comfortable and easier grip for emergency rescue teams when handling bariatric victims.
The Promove sling was launched last year at the Emergency Services Show, and has been on trials with several fire and rescue teams, ambulance authorities and mountain rescue teams across the UK since its launch.
As a direct result of feedback from the trials, the new, bespoke padded handles are designed to assist with the moving and handling of heavier casualties in particular. Not only will all new slings sold in future be provided with eight each of these handles, but they will also be sent to all emergency rescue teams already using the sling.
Dr Huw Thomas, creator of the Promove explains: “The response from the trials have been very positive, with the only negative aspect being the handles digging in when moving and handling heavier casualties”.
He adds: “The new customised handles will reduce any chaffing or friction to the operative’s hands, and will ensure the emergency rescues teams can provide a safe and straight-forward evacuation for casualties”.
The sling is designed for moving and handling incapacitated or disabled, including bariatric individuals in confined or outdoor spaces where a hoist cannot be used.
The sling allows an individual to be moved without being manhandled and with the least risk to the operator. It has been independently tested to carry a range of different sized individuals, from children to large adults weighing up to 45 stone (290kgs).
Promove is easily placed beneath an incapacitated person whether lying on the ground, seated in a chair or restricted in a tight corner. It provides good support, forming a bucket shaped seat, giving a sense of security for moving and transferring.
The new padded handles will provide operatives with excellent grip to the front and rear, and will allow a maximum of eight operatives to take part in any evacuation, providing space permits.
The sling can be used with a transfer board and / or glide sheet to assist in the safe handling of individuals, particularly if they have no upper body strength and cannot assist with the transfer. Promove was designed by a disabled person with input from moving and handling specialists in Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and Health care.
Promove will be on show on Stand 200 at the Emergency Services Show in Stoneleigh Park near Coventry from 19-20 November. For further information on the event or to register to attend please visit http://www.theemergencyservicesshow2008.com
