The new Bari-KitTM from Promove

The new Bari-Kit™ from Promove was launched at the Safety and Health Expo at the NEC on Thursday 19 May as part of the Product and Innovation Hub.

Based on the highly successful Promove Emergency Evacuation Sling, the Bari-Kit aims to provide the operative with a complete set of items needed at the first point of contact when moving and handling a bariatric patient.

In addition to three sizes of sling, the Bari-Kit includes a positioning strap, a padded lifting belt and a wide tubular slide sheet. The ergonomic design of the Bari-Kit has been achieved with input from medical and healthcare specialists and from existing customers in the Emergency Services.  The kit overcomes three critical problems in handling bariatric individuals:

1.       Danger of suffocation from being laid horizontally – When moving the bariatric patient, the Promove sling maintains the individual in a seated position.  This can be critical as, when in the supine position, the abdominal organs press against the diaphragm and for a bariatric person with breathing difficulties this could prove fatal.

2.       Danger of musculoskeletal injury to the operatives – The Promove sling is designed to be placed beneath the individual without the need to roll or lift.  Once in place, the sling provides strategically placed handles to move the individual with the least strain on the operatives. The positioning strap helps to adjust the position of the individual to insert the sling while the slide sheet reduces the need for lifting.  The extension handles and lifting belt allow the greatest possible number of personnel to share the load thus reducing the weight borne by each person.

3.       Danger of tissue damage to the bariatric individual – Bariatric patients are often very vulnerable to skin damage and can suffer painful skin tearing that can be difficult to treat.  The Promove slings and the accessories in the Bari-Kit are designed to handle the individual with the greatest of care and dignity, reducing the need to grasp or pull on the person’s body.

Promove’s Bari-Kit is designed to help you help others.

Simplifying the sling specifications

I enjoyed a visit to Strasbourg in July to meet the people at Horizon Vertical, the Promove distributor in France (www.promove.fr) and, in addition to some really useful discussions enjoyed some sumptuous meal took time to see the beautiful city and the charming villages of the region. Horizon Vertical works closely with the Fire and Ambulance Services had have found a warm welcome for the Promove sling. Our discussions revolved around the differences between the models offered to the Emergency Services and that used for evacuation. We arrived at a specification that combined the best features of both models and we concluded that the extension handles presently sold are too complex and expensive.

Back at the mill through August and September we have been busy implementing the changes. The regular size of sling is now produced in just one form, incorporating the best of the slings offered to disabled, evacuation and emergency services. It is available in a choice of red or grey. Every sling has four padded handles along the top with another pair of webbing handles set in the back of the sling to provide an alternative lifting point. For the Emergency Services and Evacuation every sling is supplied with eight extension handles, made from a soft webbing and attached to the sling as a choker. For disabled people there is an option of hoist straps which allow the sling to be used with a hoist.

We are sure our customers will appreciate the simplified choice.

Obesity and sleeping at the wheel

Two items caught my eye in the Autumn 2009 issue of Column (Journal of National Back Exchange) which are both worrying, but taken together are alarming.  The first refers to recent figures from the Department of Health that shows the number of hospital admissions of people with obesity has almost tripled in the last five years.  When seen in greater detail, the largest increase was in the 18 – 30 year old age group.

These figures confirm what we are constantly being told, that there is an “obesity epidemic” in the UK and, apparently in most of the affluent countries of the world.  This has serious implications for our health service and society in general.  However, taken with the next article in Column the implications are far more serious than that.

Dr Bertrand de Silva, a specialist in sleep disorder highlights the dangers of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its link to obesity.  He believes the condition should be a cause for concern for 25% of UK drivers.  Dr de Silva says “only 15% of OSA sufferers have been diagnosed so, despite the dangers, the majority are oblivious that they have the condition.  It is now recognised that OSA, which causes daytime sleepiness, doubles the risk of road accidents.”

The challenges facing the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) are nothing if not unpredictable, and are one of the main reasons why South Yorkshire FRS has chosen a versatile piece of equipment for emergency evacuations.
