New Emergency Evacuation Equipment for the Health Industry

Help is at hand for disabled persons and healthcare professionals at this years’ Naidex show at the NEC in Birmingham with an innovative moving and handling device.

The sling, called Promove, is designed for moving and handling incapacitated or disabled, including bariatric persons in situations where a traditional hoist and sling cannot be used.

The sling allows an individual to be moved without being manhandled and with the least risk to the operator, and has been independently tested to carry a range of different sized individuals, from children to large adults weighing up to 45 stone.

Dr Huw Thomas, creator of Promove has been confined to a wheelchair for 30 years and developed the sling with his own needs in mind. He explains: “When travelling with family and friends in their cars, I use the sling to assist them in transferring me from my wheelchair into their car.”

“The sling can be quickly and easily placed beneath me while I’m in my wheelchair or in the seat of a car, and with the strategically placed handles at least four people can lift me easily and quickly, making the transfer safe and controlled for me and them.”

The slippery material allows the Promove to be easily placed beneath an incapacitated person whether lying on the ground, seated in a chair or stuck in a tight corner. It provides good support, forming a bucket shaped seat, giving a sense of security when moving and handling.

The sling can be used with a transfer board and / or glide sheet to assist in the safe handling of individuals, and will allow them to be moved instantly without being manhandled, and with the least risk to the operator.

Dr Thomas adds: “The sling can be used in various other situations such as for children whilst visiting theme parks, or for disabled individuals like myself who lead an active life and enjoy the freedom of doing what they want, when they want.”

To move a bariatric individual it is recommended that a minimum of four operatives is needed, and as many as eight operatives can be employed if space and risk assessments permit.

Promove was designed with input from moving and handling specialists in Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and Nursing services.

The Promove will be exhibited on Stand: C166.
