First Local Authority Orders the Promove Sling

The Promove sling is firmly established as an emergency evacuation device in the disability and emergency services market but has recently attracted interest from several local authorities.

Falkirk Council’s Mobile Emergency Care Service (MECS) is one of the first local authorities to order the slings to help them deal with community emergencies.

The sling, called Promove, is designed for moving and handling incapacitated or disabled, including bariatric individuals in confined or outdoor spaces where a hoist cannot be used.

Linda Macpherson, Team Manager, Falkirk MECS Service said: “We will not use it as a lifting aid as such but rather as a contribution to the range of moving and handling equipment we stock. We have found in trial use that it enables our staff to make the service user secure and comfortable before effecting non weight-bearing manual handling transfers”.

She adds: “Use of the simple but effective Promove will contribute to the safety and wellbeing of both service users and staff within Falkirk Council’s MECS Service.”

The sling allows an individual to be moved without being manhandled and with the least risk to the operator. It has been independently tested to move a range of different sized individuals, from children eight years old to large adults weighing up to 45 stone.

Promove is easily placed beneath an incapacitated person whether lying on the ground, seated in a chair or restricted in a tight corner. It provides good support, forming a bucket shaped seat, giving a sense of security for moving and transferring.

Dr Huw Thomas, creator of Promove said: “This is our single largest order within this sector and we are delighted with the feedback we’ve had from the MECS Teams about the sling and how its helping make their procedures easier”.
